In this tough economy many people are looking for ways to supplement income. Many times people look at nontraditional jobs as a way to bring in additional money. Becoming a flight attendant may seem like  a daunting task at first because of the large amount of training that is required by the FAA. However, once a person has completed the steps required to become a flight attendant, the rewards are high. Unique scheduling and other benefits that come with being a flight attendant make this an interesting choice to earn income.

Job Qualifications

There are a few specific federal requirements that must be met before one can become a flight attendant. Candidates for being a flight attendant must be 18 or older. Candidates must be willing to relocate to a base city for the beginning of their career. Also, successful candidates must be willing to submit to a background check. Other than specific airline qualifications there are no other requirements for becoming a flight attendant. Many independent companies offer “training” but these are rarely accepted by major airlines. Be wary of any company that requires you to pay for training.

Pay

Pay for a flight attendant is similar to most industries in that it is dependent on experience. New flight attendants can make anywhere from $20,000 through $40,000 per year. Median flight attendant salary figures vary from state to state but can top out at $75,000 per year.

Advantages

There are many advantages to becoming a flight attendant. The primary advantage is the flexibility to maintain two careers at one time. This makes it perfect as a secondary career for those who are looking to supplement income. The average schedule for a flight attendant is a three day work week. This equals about 110 hours of work per month, or 3 10 hour shifts a week. This gives flight attendants plenty of time to work in other fields and pursue other career options like real estate, writing, photography and freelancing.

Disadvantages

The biggest disadvantage towards becoming a flight attendant is that they often have to spend large amounts of time away from home. The three days of work a week are spent travelling and not at the home base. This makes this type of career unacceptable for people who need to stay at home to take care of family or other work obligations.

The hours worked are also long and flight attendants spend much of that time on their feet. If standing for long periods of time does not sound appealing then becoming a flight attendant may not be the best secondary career choice.

Becoming a Flight Attendant

It is not easy to become a flight attendant. In one year a major airline like Delta can receive up to 90,000 applications for the flight attendant positions. The hiring pool represents only 2 percent of all applicants. This shouldn’t discourage you from applying to be a flight attendant. A background in customer service or having worked in the airline industry will give applicants a leg up against the competition. If you have a passion for airline security, enjoy customer service and want to travel, then consider becoming a flight attendant.
